Abstract

Burns are an event of loss of tissue caused by contact with a heat source. The use of natural ingredients as a burn treatment replaces the use of drugs with synthetic materials that can have side effects. The leaves of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) have burn healing activity. The compounds in sweet potato leaves which had burn treatment activity were extracted using 70% ethanol and fractionated using ethyl acetate as a solvent. The ethyl acetate fraction of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) was identified to see the secondary compound content. The ethyl acetate fraction of sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) was formulated in the form of a gel. The concentrations of the ethyl acetate fraction studied consisted of 1%, 2% and 3%. The burn test was carried out using male Wistar rats which had been treated with second degree burns. Burns were made using metal with a diameter of 2 cm which was heated on a bunsen fire. Burn observation was carried out every 3 days by measuring the diameter of the burn. The percentage of reduction in burns was processed using the One Way Anova test and observed through a graph of the percentage of reduction in burns. The statistical results showed a p value > 0.05, which means there was no statistically significant difference between F1, F2, F3, positive controls and negative controls. However, the graph shows the difference in the reduction of burns, the highest graph is obtained when giving F2 with a concentration of 2% ethyl acetate fraction of sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.).
