Abstract

Excess cholesterol levels in the liver can cause Non-alcohol Steatohepatitis or often called NASH. Cucumber peel is the one of the plants that has potential as an anti-cholesterol agent. The purpose of this study was to determine the anticholesterol potential of the ethanol extract of cucumber peel (Cucumis sativus L.) and to determine the EC50 value of ethanol extract of cucumber peel. Cucumber peel was extracted using maceration method with ethanol 96%. Results of phytochemical screening from ethanol extract of cucumber peel are known to contains flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and alkaloids. Anticholesterol potential test using Lieberman-burchad reagent detected its absorption using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 665.0 nm with operating time for 15 minutes. The concentration series used were 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, and 150 ppm. The result of quantitative test from the ethanol extract of cucumber peel as anticholesterol showed the percentage of cholesterol reduction at each concentration that was 28.5041%; 35.4534%; 39.6937%; 45.8186%; 51.2367%; and 55.1236%. The EC50 value in the ethanol extract of cucumber peel was reached at a concentration of 122,040 ppm.
