Abstract

Tourniquet is a medical device that is used repeatedly and direct contact with the patient's skin so that it can cause the transfer of bacteria contained in the tourniquet to the skin or vice versa so that it can cause infection. One of the infections that occurs can be caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, which is a commensal bacteria as well as an opportunistic pathogen that can be found on human skin. The purpose of this study was to identify the presence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria contamination on tourniquets at the Surakarta area clinic. The type of research used in this scientific paper is descriptive research. This research was conducted at the Bacteriology Laboratory of the National College of Health Sciences and the time of this research was carried out on March 22-25, 2021. The research sample used was 15 tourniquets that met the criteria from several clinics spread across 5 sub-districts in Surakarta City. The sampling technique used is quota sampling. The results showed that no Staphylococcus aureus bacteria contamination was found on the tourniquet. This could be due to the absence of contamination between the tourniquet and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria originating from clinical samples at the Clinic in the Surakarta area. So it can be concluded that no Staphylococcus aureus bacteria contamination was found on the tourniquet at the Clinic in the Surakarta area. However, it was found that there were other bacterial contaminations with a percentage, namely gram-positive bacilli (47%), gram-negative bacilli (47%) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (6%).
