Abstract

Bacillus thuringiensis is an effective biolarvicides to control Aedes aegypti larvae. The development of B. thuringiensis as a biolarvicide still faces obstacles due to high production costs. the aim is to develop cassava and coconut milk as alternative medium for B. thuringiensis var israelensis which has a cheaper price. B. thuringiensis var israelensis was cultured on commercial media / TPB and on alternative media (cassava, coconut milk, and a combination of cassava & coconut milk). The study population was a culture of B. thuringiensis var israelensis with the sample of this study being a culture of B. thuringiensis var israelensis which was free of contamination. The sampling technique used in this research is purposive sampling. The research data were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the cell biomass of B. thuringiensis that cultured on alternative medium was higher than that of commercial medium. Toxic effect of B. thuringiensis against Ae. aegypti larvae that cultured in alternative medium had lower LC50 and LC90 values than commercial medium. Based on these results, it was concluded that B. thuringiensis var israelensis cultured on alternative medium had better growth and toxicity than commercial medium.
