Abstract

Salmonella typhi is a bacterium that causes typhoid fever (typoid fever), an acute endemic disease that occurs in the digestive tract. Salmonella typhi enters the human body through food and drink contaminated by these bacteria and treatment with antibiotics. The high use of antibiotics inappropriately can lead to antibiotic resistance. One natural ingredient used for alternative medicine is bitter melon (Momordica charantia L) This scientific paper aims to determine the effectiveness of the extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L) as an antibacterial against Salmonella typhi, based on literature studies. This research uses the literature study method. Data collection in this study uses secondary data taken from several scientific journals. Analysis of the data used descriptive analysis. Research results from the three reviewed reference journals showed that all the concentration concentrations were able to form a radical zone. The highest concentrations of the three journals successively showed inhibition zone diameters of 13.5 mm (80%), 17 mm (1.0 ml) and 17.21 mm (80%), indicating that the higher the concentration given the greater the radical zone formed. From the literature study referred to, it can be concluded that the extract of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L) is able to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhi because the higher the concentration is given the greater the radical zones formed.
