Abstract
Worm infections are still a health problem in developing countries such as Indonesia. The prevalence of worms in Indonesia is still very high, at 2.5%-62%, generally occurring in groups of people with poor sanitation. The diagnosis of worm infection can be done by examining the preparations using Eosin, Lugol, and Turmeric Extract (Curcuma domestica Val.) dyes as alternative dyes. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of turmeric in eggs stage of STH (Soil Transmitted Helminth) when compared with eosin and lugol dyes. The research design used in this study was experimental. Turmeric was extracted using the maceration method by soaking turmeric simplicia in 96% ethanol solution for 48 hours. Then turmeric extract was used for stool samples that had been examined for sedimentation. The results of staining of Eosin, lugol and turmeric extract gave 100% effective results at the egg stage of Ascaris sp., while at the egg stage of Hookworm sp. and Trichuris sp. turmeric extract gave an effective result of 89.9%. After the fisher exact 2x2 test was carried out from the three stains, it can be concluded that turmeric extract (Curcuma domestica Val.) was able to color the egg stage of STH (Soil Transmitted Helminth) worms and turmeric extract at a concentration of 10% could be used as an alternative dye at the egg stage of Ascaris sp.
