Abstract

Hair dye cosmetic preparations generally use synthetic dyes that often cause health and environmental problems. Anthocyanins in Telang Flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) have potential as natural dyes. Telang flower ethanol extract was formulated as a gel preparation with a combination of carbopol and HPMC as a gelling agent with better physical properties. This study aims to determine the concentration of the combination of Carbopol and HPMC to produce the optimum gel preparation, determine the color produced after stability testing and the effectiveness of the telang flower extract hair coloring gel, determine the safety of the telang flower extract hair coloring gel by irritation test. The gel was made with a 2% telang flower extract based on carbopol and HPMC. The formula was tested for organoleptic physical properties, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, dispersion and adhesion. The composition of HPMC and carbopol was determined using Design Expert 11. The experimental results and predictions of SLD were validated by one sample t-test with 95% confidence level. The optimum formula was tested for irritation using rabbits by calculating the irritation index and looking at the irritation table. The optimum formula of the telang flower ethanol extract gel consisted of 1.5% carbopol and 3.5% HPMC. The results of the physical properties test obtained a homogeneous gel, pH 5, viscosity 484.86 dPa.S, spreadability 4.13 cm2, and adhesion 5.12 seconds. There was no significant difference between the experimental response and the prediction. Viscosity, adhesion, dispersibility (p < 0.05) were analyzed using one sample t-test. Optimum formula for hair dye with minimal irritation.
