Abstract

Inflammation is a local reaction of tissue to infection or injury and involves more mediators. Katuk leaves (Sauropus androgynous L. Merr) are known to contain flavonoids which are used as anti-inflammatory. Inflammation treatment has been carried out by oral means, usually the drugs used have side effects in the form of gastric ulcers, so the preparations are modified with external treatment. Gels are semi-solid preparations consisting of small molecules or large molecules in a liquid solvent which are made like jelly with the addition of a gelling agent. This study aims to determine the stability of the gel preparation, compare the antiinflammatory activity of the gel and determine the most effective concentration as an anti-inflammatory. Katuk leaves were extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol as solvent. The formulation of katuk leaf ethanol extract gel with a concentration ratio of 8%, 9% and 10%. The gel preparation was tested for physical stability for 3 cycles using a temperature of 4o C and 40o C. The physical stability test of the gel included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and viscosity. Anti-inflammatory testing was carried out by measuring the volume of the rat's paws. And the result is astatistical test One Way Anova. The results showed that the gel preparation of katuk leaf ethanol extract (Sauropus androgynous L. Merr) could provide a topical anti-inflammatory effect on male Wistar strain rats induced with carrageenan with an optimum concentration of 8% with (%PI) of 28.19%. The preparation of ethanol extract gel of katuk leaves (Sauropus androgynous L. Merr) with concentrations of 8%, 9% and 10% met the physical stability test.
