Abstract

Helminthiasis is an infectious disease caused by worm parasites. The parasitic worms that often cause this disease are from the Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH) group. Worm infections in humans are influenced by the environment and personal hygiene. The diagnosis of helminthiasis can be done by examining the identification of worm eggs through feces as the gold standard, but based on the mode of transmission of the disease, the examination can be done through nails. The purpose of this study is to determine the incidence of helminthiasis in nail material and feces, also to reveal the different results of examination of worm eggs between nail material and feces. This examination used a simple random sampling technique with 50 people as scavengers at the Jatibarang TPA Semarang. The data analysis technique used was univariate analysis to determine the incidence of helminthiasis and bivariate analysis using the Mann Whitney test. Based on the results of the study, it could be seen that the incidence of helminthiasis using nail samples was 2%, and feces samples were 12%. According to the Mann Whitney test, p value = 0.049, which meant there was a significant difference in the examination of STH worm eggs in nail and feces samples. Therefore, it can be found that nail samples cannot replace stool samples as an examination material in diagnosing helminthiasis.
