Abstract

Worm infection, caused by Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), is a public health problem in Indonesia. It is classified as neglected disease, which is a type of less noticed disease with chronic and asymptomatic traits, along with its long term visible impact. PPSU officers are susceptible towards worm infection. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of worm infection by STH within PPSU officers in Makassar Sub District – East Jakarta. This research is a descriptive study using cross sectional method and was conducted at National Referral Center Prodia Clinical Laboratory in Central Jakarta. The variable of this research is STH worm infection. The samples used consisted of human nails and feces, each of which added up to 31 samples from the whole population of 50 PPSU officers. This research used the saturated NaCl flotation method. The results of this study indicated that 9.7% and 0% of STH eggs were found on human feces and nails samples, respectively. The STH eggs found included 6.5% and 3.2% of Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichura eggs, respectively, mainly caused by poorly-managed personal hygiene (up to 19.35%) due to lack of maintaining cleanliness, washing hands, cutting nails, and for never consuming anthelmintics. No STH eggs were found on human nails samples because 80.65% of the respondents had their personal hygiene well maintained already. Worm infection on PPSU officers can be prevented by implementing clean and healthy living behavior, as well as wearing personal protective equipment while doing their job.
