Abstract
APO-B is the largest apolipoprotein in the Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) fraction that transports lipid from the liver and intestines to peripheral tissues. Hypertriglyceridemia triggers the liver to produce large-size VLDL and triglyceride-rich LDL. The cholesterol ester transfer protein (CETP) exchanges a number of triglycerides from VLDL with cholesterol esters from LDL, resulting in richer LDL in triglycerides. Triglycerides are substrates favored by hepatic lipase that will be hydrolyzed to produce smaller and denser LDL (sd-LDL). Since 90% of APO-B is found in the LDL fraction, APO-B levels roughly describe the number of LDL particles. Therefore, K-LDL/APO-B ratio describes the LDL particles content. This observational analytic study was conducted using a cross sectional design. Quota sampling technique was employed to select 31 patients who underwent lipid profiles at the Prodia Wonogiri Clinical Laboratory and were diagnosed with dyslipidemia. This study measured the levels of APO-B, K LDL/APO-B ratio, and triglycerides. Pearson correlation test was performed to analyze the data. The data analysis resulted in correlation coefficients between triglycerides and APO-B of -0.135 and triglycerides and K-LDL/APO-B ratio of -0.819. The sig values of triglycerides on APO-B and triglycerides on K-LDL/APO-B ratio were 0.469 and 0.000 respectively. The direction of the relationship between triglycerides with APO-B and K-LDL/APO-B ratio was found negative (inversely proportional). In conclusion, triglycerides did not correlate with APO-B, while there was a strong correlation between triglycerides and K-LDL/APO-B ratio in dyslipidemic patients at the Prodia Wonogiri Clinical Laboratory.
