Abstract
Shigella dysenteriae is one of the bacteria that can cause diarrhea. Diarrhea treatment usually uses antibiotics, however, the use of antibiotics is not rational and continous can increase bacterial resistance. One of the traditional treatments recommended is to use medicinal plants leaves Catharanthus roseus (L.) G. Don which contain antibacterial compounds, such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins. This research was purposed to determine the inhibitory boiled water of C. roseus (L.) G. Don on the growth of Shigella dysenteriae. The research method was used descriptive design and post test with control. The research was conducted at Bacteriology Laboratory STIKES National in October 2019 until April 2020. The sample of this research is various concentration of C. roseus (L.) G. Don leaves with 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% concentration, positive control with Ciprofloxacin 5µg and negative control with sterile aquadest. Inhibition test of bacteria was carried out using the disk diffusion method. The sampling technique was using quota sampling. The results showed that in all boiled water concentrations of leaves of C. roseus (L.) G. Don could not form a zone of inhibition. It can be concluded that C. roseus (L.) G. Don leaves boiled water is not able to form a radical zone against the growth of Shigella dysenteriae and the concentrations of 100% of C. roseus (L.) G. Don leaves boiled water can not form the diameter of the barrier zone (radical zone) which is included in the criteria sensitive to Ciprofloxacin antibiotics based on CLSI 2019.
