Abstract

Infectious diseases are diseases caused by bacteria, one of which is an infection in the digestive tract that can cause diarrhoea. Escherichia coli ESBL is a type of bacteria that is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics. Basil leaves (Ocimum sanctum L.) have been known to have antibacterial properties that can be used for alternative medicine. The purpose of this study was to prove the inhibition of ethanol extract of 70% and 96% of basil leaves on the growth of Escherichia coli ESBL. This research used a descriptive experimental method with concentration variations of 100,000 ppm, 200,000 ppm, 300,000 ppm, 400,000 ppm, 500,000 ppm for each ethanol extract. In this study, the antibiotic Ciprofloxacin 5 g was used as a positive control and 10% DMSO as a negative control. Data analysis in this study used non-parametric statistical tests. The results of this study are that basil leaf extract with 70% ethanol and 96% Ocimum sanctum L. leaves was able to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli ESBL. The diffusion test showed that the average diameter of the largest inhibition zone was at a concentration of 500,000 ppm extract 70% (7.38 mm) and 96% (7.25 mm) of Ocimum sanctum L leaves.
