Abstract

Inflammation is a normal protective response of the body to tissue injury caused by physical trauma, damaging chemical substances, or microbiological substances. Binahong (Andredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) leaves contain flavonoid compounds that can be used as anti-inflammatory. The purpose of this study was to determine the anti-inflammatory effect of polar, semi-polar, non-polar, and ethanolic extracts of the leaves of binahong (Andredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) in carrageenan-induced white rats (Rattus norvegicus L.). Binahong leaves were extracted by maseration method using 70% ethanol as solvent. The ethanol extract of binahong leaves was fractionated with n-hexane as a nonpolar solvent, ethyl acetate as a semipolar solvent, and water as a polar solvent. The extract and the three types of fractions were tested for anti-inflammatory by measuring the volume of the paws of rats that had been induced by carrageenan, using Diclofenac Sodium as a positive control. The results of the data obtained were analyzed statistically One Way Anova. The results of the anti-inflammatory test of extracts and fractions of binahong leaves showed that all treatments had anti-inflammatory properties against carrageenan-induced foot volume. Percent inflammatory persecution produced 21.67%±5.86 (ethanol extract), 23.83%±7.75 (nonpolar fraction), 25.17%±3.69 (semipolar fraction), 22%±9.12 ( Polar Fraction). One Way Anova statistical results P>0.05 where there was no significant difference between the extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction. The ethyl acetate fraction of binahong leaves is the fraction that has the highest anti-inflammatory effect
